The 91st edition of Dover Days returns to historic Downtown Dover and begins the month of May on the 3rd with a preview night capped off by fireworks followed by a day full of activities including the annual parade and festival on May 4th. Look for more info on page 8. Vintage car enthusiasts will sure to be in Lewes on the 4th to show and view classic British made motorcars. The annual gathering ends with a parade in downtown Lewes allowing easy access to the Lewes sidewalk sales held throughout the three days of the weekend on May 3rd- 5th. See page 9 for details. Rehoboth Beach will also be hosting their 41st annual spring sidewalk sales throughout downtown also on the weekend of May 3rd-5th. The annual Dover Days is one of Delaware’s largest and longest-running free events. This year’s festival will be held on Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th. Dover Days will feature the city’s longest-running festival with a parade on Saturday, Mat=y 4th beginning at 9 a.m. but it will begin the evening before with an evening concert at 7 p.m., food trucks and fireworks.Both day’s events and festivities are a free community event for all ages. Friday, May 3rd activities will feature: Food Trucks with goodies of all types. Milford Community Band’s 40 members bringing patriotic and audience favorite music Friday, May 3rd, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Brothers Pyro, Inc. who provided fireworks for last year’s Dover Days Festival and July 4 celebration, will light up the sky at dusk. Saturday, May 4th events will kick off with the state’s larg- est parade at 9 a.m. at Pennsylvania Ave., and come down State Street. The stage and reviewing stand will be in front of PNC bank on the corner of State and Loockerman streets. Reviewing stand guests will include Dover’s Mayor, local celebrities, and Dover AFB wing commanders, all in colo- nial period clothing. In addition to bands, the parade will include floats and dis- plays from local organizations, businesses, schools, veter- ans, non-profits, churches, activity groups, and candidates 91st Dover Days Festival, May 3rd & 4th and elected officials. Historical reenactors will march in the parade and later present on stage while another four roam the festival and interact with individuals and groups. They will wear iden- tification of the historic heroes they represent. Some are teachers but all will provide a lot of information about their character and pose for photos. Others displays will include The Wheelmen-Historical Big Wheel bikes; woodworking and Colonial trapper dem- onstrations; Dover Area WWII historical heroes; Diamond State Lacemaker Artisan Crafts will make bobbin lace; and Lenape Tribe Historical demonstrations on Native American culture and lifestyle will be provided. The festival will include over 120 vendors on State Street with special activities for children and families, including inflatable bounce houses; a tethered hot air balloon; sandcas- tle building; balloon animal makers; street performers with juggling, balance and crazy antics; water gun fun games and trackless train rides. Maypole dancing on Dover’s Historic Green by area middle school students will reenact colonial activities. It will take place after the parade between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Adults interested in antique and restored autos can visit an on-site car show from local clubs. The Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the British Car Club of Delaware are co-sponsors of the show. It will be held at the Lewes Ferry Termi- nal, 43 Cape Henlopen Drive, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with no spectator entry after 2 p.m. This year’s event committee has announced that the 2024 show will recognize Lotus as its featured marque. Two years ago the show introduced a new class of vehicles – Fu- ture Classics. The Future Classics category is comprised of models, year 2001 to the present. According to Betsy Reamer, executive director of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, “The popularity of this show has contin- ued to grow over the years and the show’s venue at the Cape May- Lewes Ferry terminal in Lewes allows for staging 120 vehicles with the backdrop of the beautiful Delaware Bay.” Amenities at the terminal include food and beverage service at the Lewes Coffee Company and Grain on the Rocks and public rest rooms. The British Motorcar Show concludes at 3 p.m. with the Winners’ Circle Parade from the ferry terminal, across the drawbridge and then down Second Street. The British Motorcar Show is scheduled the same weekend as the Spring Merchants’ Sidewalk Sale in the Historic Lewes Commer- cial District.
